A guide to our Davis weather stations
Access to real-time weather data is important for aviators and farmers. It not only helps with decision-making and planning, but it can also improve results and outcomes, whether you’re planning a flight or keeping an eye on your crops and soil. Weather stations can be a hugely beneficial tool for Zimbabwean pilots and farmers.
Relying simply on broad regional forecasts is not enough. Personal weather stations give real-time, hyperlocal data. Cutting Edge is the authorised supplier of Davis Instruments in Zimbabwe, which are world-renowned for their accuracy and reliability. Many farmers and aerodromes are already using these instruments to their advantage across the country.
Two models of Davis weather stations
We offer two amazing Davis weather stations: the Vantage Vue and the Vantage Pro2. Davis Instruments, the world leader in personal weather stations, manufactures both models, which ensure high precision and continuous data updates every few seconds, as well as an exceptional wireless transmission distance of up to 300 meters.
Both devices are solar-powered and constructed from UV-stabilised polycarbonate to withstand extreme weather conditions and harsh sunshine. These two models cater to a variety of needs and provide diverse information, so we’ll help you make an informed decision.

The smaller of the two models is the Davis Vantage Vue. This is a great entry-level yet extremely capable weather station, ideal for most farmers, small-scale agricultural operations, or private aviators with airstrips on their farms. It’s an all-in-one outdoor sensor suite, which means that all of the sensors (anemometer, rain collector, temperature and humidity sensors) are combined into a single, small instrument.
This design makes installation simple and fast. The Vantage Vue measures key weather factors, such as outdoor temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and rainfall. Its integrated console displays current data, daily and monthly highs or lows, and historical data, making it extremely user-friendly. While small, the Vantage Vue provides dependable and exact data, allowing you to make better decisions based on the immediate local weather conditions.

For more in-depth agricultural applications and vital aviation operations, the Davis Vantage Pro2 provides professional-grade precision and unrivalled expandability. Unlike the Vantage Vue, the Vantage Pro2’s sensors are modular. Importantly, the anemometer can be disconnected and installed up to 12 meters away from the main Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS). This flexibility enables the wind sensor to be placed in an ideal location, resulting in the most accurate wind speed and direction measurements without interference from other sensors or structures.
The Vantage Pro2 measures all of the metrics of the Vantage Vue, but with improved quality and accuracy and reduced intervals between readings. What’s more, the Vantage Pro2’s main advantage is its ability to integrate additional sensors. This includes optional sensors for UV radiation, solar radiation (which is required for evapotranspiration calculations in agriculture), leaf moisture, and soil moisture and salinity.
It can also accept data from other wireless temperature or humidity stations, giving you a more comprehensive weather monitoring network throughout a large farm or airport. The Vantage Pro2 comes in a variety of configurations, including wired and wireless versions, as well as a fan-aspirated model for incredibly precise temperature and humidity readings under harsh sunlight conditions. This makes the Vantage Pro2 the best option for extensive meteorological information.

Why Zimbabwean farmers need weather stations
Accurate weather data from Davis Instruments is a game-changer for farmers, whether they are growing tobacco, blueberries, or rearing livestock. Real-time data on rainfall, temperature, humidity, and wind helps farmers determine the best irrigation schedules, avoiding both under-watering and wasteful overwatering. Soil probes become particularly useful in this regard.
Monitoring leaf moisture and humidity can provide early indications of disease and insect outbreaks, allowing for the targeted administration of pesticides or fungicides. This also reduces chemical use and costs. Knowing prevailing wind patterns is also important for chemical spraying, as it reduces drift and ensures accurate application.
Historical data acquired by the weather station will help farmers with long-term crop planning and decision-making for planting dates and harvesting schedules – all of which contribute to higher yields and more resilient agricultural practices. Even for livestock farmers, knowing temperature ranges and wind chill can improve judgment on animal health and shelter.

Weather stations for aviators
It goes without saying; pilots need to know weather conditions at their points of departure and landing before they take off. Whether pilots use private airstrips or civil aviation aerodromes, precise weather information is critical to pre-flight planning and en-route safety. In Zimbabwe, where many remote airstrips lack governmental meteorological services, a private weather station is a useful asset.
Pilots rely extensively on the data provided by air traffic control or other pilots, but sometimes weather can change significantly since the last observation was made. Wind speed and direction are crucial factors in safe takeoffs and landings, especially on shorter or dirt runways. Barometric pressure is required for precise altimeter settings, and temperature and humidity affect aircraft performance.
Rainfall and visibility data are vital for determining VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions and associated risks such as fog or thunderstorms. For aerodromes, a Davis Vantage Pro2 can provide comprehensive data for Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) or supplement existing meteorological reports, resulting in improved safety measures, operational efficiency, and critical decision-making for pilots, air traffic controllers, and ground crews.
