To keep Zimbabwe’s best golf courses in tip-top shape, groundskeepers must be precise and use reliable machinery. Mechanised golf course maintenance enables greenkeepers and groundskeepers to manage large areas efficiently while maintaining the high standards required by serious golfers.

Investing in specialised and trustworthy equipment from world-renowned manufacturers, such as Husqvarna and Allett, is more than a matter of convenience; it’s a solid decision that affects course quality, maintenance efficiency, and, ultimately, the golfer’s experience. Cutting Edge is the supplier of a range of Husqvarna and Allett products for Zimbabwe’s golf courses.

The products include greens machines, robotic lawnmowers, ride-on mowers, battery tools and petrol-powered site maintenance machines. The quality of the tool affects the quality of the work, so professional golf courses should consider the following Husqvarna and Allett machines…

Cylinder mowers for golf courses

Perhaps the most important aspect of a well-kept golf course is its greens. Short turf and a consistent lawn make for a professional playing experience. The Allett C20 cylinder mower is a specialised machine for greens maintenance and has been developed in the United Kingdom. The Allett C20 is known for its ability to deliver an ultra-fine cut and create the ideal playing surface.

Its precision cutting height adjustment and interchangeable cartridges ensure that professional golf courses maintain a consistent and flawless condition. The 10-blade cylinder allows for a cutting height of between 2.4mm and 19mm with a 510mm cutting width. The large grass box attaches to the front of the mower to collect all the clippings, which can be used for mulch or compost.

Its 3.6kW Honda GX160 engine is extremely reliable. Cutting Edge also sticks the Sorrel Roller cartridge, which is essentially an aerator, as well as the Verticut blade cartridge for integrated cutting and scarifying, which helps to improve the density of the turf.

Robotic mowers for fairways

Besides the greens, the fairways require a huge amount of care. So why not completely remove the fuss and leave it to an intelligent autonomous lawn mower? Husqvarna Automowers are completely self-sufficient and improve the quality of the lawn by constantly cutting on pre-determined schedules. Groundskeepers can program these robotic mowers to cut at night, so they don’t interrupt play or get in the way.

Husqvarna Automowers are a labour-saving option that cost less to own over five years than conventional mowing products. For Par 3 fairways and areas of up to 5000 square metres, the Husqvarna Automower 450X is ideal as it can easily navigate hills while maintaining a constant and level cut. It’s equipped with GPS and a weather timer too.

Larger fairways and areas of up to 10 000 square metres will need a Husqvarna Automower 550 EPOS, which uses satellite-based virtual boundary technology to eliminate the need for actual boundary wires. This enables highly customisable mowing patterns and a simple change of mowing zones. These robotic mowers run quietly and emit no emissions, helping to create a more pleasant and sustainable environment for golfers and groundskeepers.

Ride-on mowers for roughs

Ride-on mowers can be used for fairways, but we recommend using them for roughs and the outskirts of the course. They allow groundskeepers to cover large areas quickly and efficiently. The Husqvarna R 316TX Rider offers exceptional manoeuvrability with its articulated steering, making it ideal for navigating around trees, bunkers, and other obstacles on the course. Its front-mounted cutting deck provides excellent visibility and reach under bushes and benches.

For expansive, open areas, the Husqvarna Z248F Zero Turn and Husqvarna Z460 Zero Turn mowers deliver unmatched speed and efficiency. Their zero-turn capability allows for tight turns on a dime and precise mowing around peripheral features, significantly reducing mowing time and improving the overall finish of the course. It’s important to note that ride-on mowers are not ideal for thick, straw-like grass, so in these areas, a brushcutter with a grass blade would be a better option.

Brushcutters and blowers for out-of-bounds areas

Maintaining the out-of-bounds areas requires powerful tools like the Husqvarna 541RS brushcutter. These zones often have wild grass and shrubs, so a robust engine and durable machine like the 541RS are needed to tackle the tough vegetation. A grass blade can be fitted to the head, instead of trimmer line) which allows the operator to cut thick tufts of straw and wild grass.

Keeping the course clear of leaves and debris is also important for playability and aesthetics, and the Husqvarna 578BTF blower offers exceptional power and comfort for clearing large areas quickly. For quieter operation in noise-sensitive zones, the Husqvarna 525iB battery-powered blower provides ample power with low noise levels and zero direct emissions.

Tree pruning cannot be overlooked

Zimbabwe’s best golf courses have year-round green lawns and an abundance of trees. However, this requires careful pruning to prevent overhanging branches from getting in the way of flying balls near the fairways. The Husqvarna 530iPT5 battery pole saw offers extended reach and quiet operation, allowing for precise trimming without disturbing golfers.

For tasks requiring the removal of larger branches or small trees, the Husqvarna T535i Top Handle and Husqvarna T525 Top Handle chainsaws offer lightweight manoeuvrability and powerful cutting performance. One is a battery-powered chainsaw with quiet efficiency and zero direct emissions, whereas the other has a lightweight petrol engine.
